Aging affects both our immune system and the health of our gums, so it makes sense to see if there is any relationship between our immune system and gum inflammation. This is a concern, especially for many of our Zero White customers, who suffer from mouth pain.

Not only is inflammation a factor in gum and tooth pain, it’s also a factor in many other areas of wellness. Inflammation itself is not a bad thing. In fact, it’s one of the important signals our body sends when something needs our attention. Inflammation is a normal part of the body’s immune response to infection or injury. In the gums, it can mean the start of periodontal disease or signal infection.

Dial A Smile has reported that in the same way our teeth are affected by aging, studies have shown that the inflammation response increases as we age. Over the last 50 or more years, inflammation has been linked to a number of diseases. These diseases are more common in people over age 65 and include atherosclerosis, osteoarthritis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

“In a recent study, Professor Clive Holmes of the University of Southampton (UK), along with colleagues from King’s College London, conducted cognitive assessments of 60 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. They examined patients’ dental health and took blood samples to measure inflammatory markers. They retested everyone in six months, and found that patients with gum disease had a six-fold rate of cognitive decline, along with an increase in systemic inflammation.”

Researchers have long been studying the effects of gum disease on our health. One thing they are looking closely at is the association between gum disease and cognitive decline, such as that associated with Alzheimers. Dial A Smile home teeth whitening is looking into this interesting topic and we want to share what we’ve found with you.

In an article published by Huffington Post, Howard Fillit, MD Geriatrician and neuroscientist; Founding Executive Director and Chief Science Officer, Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation reported the following:

Dial A Smile and Zero White home teeth whitening products formulated by Southern California company Whitening Lightning, impress proper dental hygiene upon our customers for many reasons. One of those is preventing gum disease. We frequently receive messages from customers who want to whiten teeth at home but have experienced pain in the past using other products.

Make and keep appointments with your dentist to ensure optimum dental and gum health. Regular professional cleaning will pick up what is missed by brushing at home.

Improper or infrequent brushing can allow food particles to remain in the mouth and become wedged between the teeth and gums.  The best way to minimize inflammation of the gums is to brush regularly with a soft to medium-soft brush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Use dental floss to clean between teeth and never, ever use metal or hard objects in its place.

Here are a few tips from Dial A Smile on how to take the best care of your teeth and gums:

Brush at least twice a day–not too hard to protect your gums

Floss once a day–reach all the way to the back teeth

Rinse with a bacteria-reducing mouthwash

Get immediate attention for broken or chipped teeth–even if you think it’s not serious

Minimize intake of sugar and candy–and brush after you eat them

Don’t chew hard foods–this includes biting suckers and hard candies

Pay very close attention to the studies being done on the relationship between gum inflammation and disease. It’s best to avoid problems or at least minimize the effect on your teeth and overall health!
